A standard freeway entry has a simple merge, or a section of parallel lane followed by a merge. Both these situations are straight forward to code. I’m looking for advice on an appropriate coding approach when the entry lane becomes an added lane on a freeway, especially when entry and freeway volumes are high. It could be argued that if a physical merge isn’t present then no intersection type is coded at this location. This would ignore the safety impacts caused by a large amount of traffic entering a road network and as they position themselves into their desired lanes. A proportion of drivers will want to either move to the middle lane or the fast lane, requiring more merging movements than a standard freeway entry. I’m lean towards an approach where a merge is coded but the volume is adjusted down to account for a more beneficial entry standard. What are other coders thoughts?
